Note: s grandfather, Thomas, had settled here 30 years before. In April 1782, Thomas' wife, Eleanor, three small children and two negroes were carried away by a band of Shawnees led by Black Wolf. Mrs. Ingles, little Mary and William were tomahawked. Mrs. Ingles recovered, but the two children died. Rhoda, the baby, was protected by her mother's body as she fell and was unharmed. Soon after this Thomas, his wife and infant daughter, moved
on west to Knoxville, and later to Port Gibson, Mississippi Territory, where he died, having always lived on the frontier." (Source: "Tazwell
