Notes
a. Note:   Joseph B. was a veteran of the Civil War enlisting first in Co. I of the 43rd Indiana volunteer infantry and then after receiving an early discharge for medical reasons, he re-enlisted in Co. C of the 123rd Indiana. He finished the was with that company and was discharged as a lieutenant. In years after he frequently led the Decoration Day march from the church to the cemetery in Eugene, Indiana. Joseph served some active duty at Raleigh and Jonesboro North Carolina during the Civil War.
Joseph was blacksmith and had his shop on the east end of Lot 69, facing south towards the old Eugene Presbyterian Church on Lot 68. He married Martha Malone in 1875 and in 1881, bought the house on Lot 70.
On the 1880 census, Joseph had a stepdaughter listed as Grace, age 7. This is peculiar because on forms submitted for an Army pension, it states that neither had been previously married.
It is unclear what the B stands for in his name but it was most likely not just an initial.
