Note: Henry Matteson the emigrant ancestor of a majority of Mattesons in America and of many using the names Mattison, Madison, Methewson, Mattason, Matterson, and Matson. This name is one of the easiest to be misspelled. During the term of President James Madison (1809 - 1817) many Mattesons used the spelling of Madison. Many of the Solomon Matteson family used the spelling Mattason. Many descendants of Joseph Matteson used Mathewson. Henry Came to Rhode Island in 1666/1667, during the King Phillips War. He lived on Prudence Island in Narragansett Bay, where he made peace with the indians and faithfully kept that peace. He was also a faithfull friend of Roger Williams. After the War he moved to the mainland and settled at East Greenwich, RI when the town started in 1677. On June 12, 1678, he took a 100 acres of land that had been granted John Pearce (Mason), the assembly permitting the transfer. On March 17, 1682 Henry and his wife sold to David Shippee their dwelling and 100 acres. In 1685 he was a Deputy. When Henry died Hannah sold to George Vaughn for four pounds, land that Henry bought from John Knight. Hannah Married again to Charles Hazelton.
This Henry Matteson actually come to America from Denmark, but may have lived in England for some time.
