Note: Buried in Shaftsbury, VT. Samuel was perhaps the best known Matteson. He with his seven sons and sons-in-law fought at the battle of Bennington in the Revolutionary War and was praised by General Stark, who said "Samuel Matteson, if we had more like you and your family this war would have been over long ago." Samuel Matteson was one of the pioneers, there being but two or three families when he moved to Shaftsbury, VT. The settlement was begun in 1763 and took the name of Little Rhode Island as so many migrated from that state. The land that he settled was still in possession of his descendants until 1926. Samuel was killed by indians in 1777.
