She outlived him by 24 years. When she died, she was between 74 and 79 years old. An interesting story has been handed down about Martha: "She was a woman of great force and managed her husband's estate after his death. She persisted in horseback riding as an elder woman. She fell and broke a leg and walked with a limp for the rest of her life." Their home was known as "Magoonskin", named after an indian village.
