The Smith family of Smithville or Dunkirk in the extreme northern section of Calvert County were Puritans connected with the Wells and Richardson families of Anne Arundel County. Thomas Smith, the founder, settled in Calvert County in 1670, when he received the grant of 300 acres of land called Highland. This tract is situated on the highway leading to Anne Arundel County between Lyon's Creek and Hall's Creek.It is marked by the old brick house, probably built in the late eighteenth century. Thomas also obtained the grant of Smith's Chance, which adjoins Highland to the south.
