Note: Elam's tombstone is in the Shady Grove Cumberland Presbyterian cemetery on Shady Grove Road between Macon Road and the Williston Road. It is next to Amelia Gaither's stone and is broken. It had been a fancy stone with a glass globe on top with a metal rod running through it. Lightning struck it and it was broken. Elam was very active in the church and kept the minutes of the session meetings. He was clerk of the session from Aug 1863 until some time before his death. Elam first married Amelia Tomlinson, dau. of Jackie Tomlinson and Tabitha Summers. Amelia died from exposure when Union Army Troops burned their house and contents. She had been ill for some time. Elam then married a niece of his first wife's named Tabitha Emeline Tomlinson, dau. of Perry Tomlinson and Harriet Johnson. Emeline was first married to John Guy, who was killed in the Civil War. Elam and Amelia had 12 children. Elam and Emily had no children.
