Note: There is controversy as to whether this John Gather was the same young John that accompanied John Gater to Virginia on the "Assurance" in 1635 or was born in Virginia after the arrival. If he was born in England he would have been born about 1620 in Britain. The book, "Anne Arundel Gentry" supports the belief that John Gater II was born in England in 1620 and was brought to Virginia along with his stepmother, Joan Morley in 1635. John II was a non-Conformist in Virginia and accepted the invitation of Lord Baltimore to settle in Maryland where complete religious tolerance was practiced. The exodus from Virginia began in 1649. If he had any brothers, they left no issue in Virginia because the Gater name became extinct after John II left with the possible exception of his father. He died before 1652 because his widow, Mary Geather (sic) was granted letters of administration for his estate. He left no will.
