a. Note:   On Jan 14, 1776, Henry Chew Gaither was commissioned an Ensign of Smallwood's Batallion and was soon advanced to First Lieutenant of the Flying Camp. At the termination of the war, he was Captain of the Fourth Maryland Regiment and was made an Original Member of the Society of the Cincinnati. He continued with the Army and resigned with honor on June 1, 1802, as Lieutenant Colonel of the Third United States Infantry. His eulogy stated that he had served in every battle, Monmoth excepted, which was fought by the American Army.
